Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a type of cancer that arises from squamous cells, which are flat cells found in the skin and mucous membranes. In cats, SCC is a relatively common form of cancer, particularly in certain areas of the body such as the skin, mouth, and nose. It can be aggressive and, if left untreated, may lead to significant health complications. Understanding the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for squamous cell carcinoma in cats is essential for pet owners to provide the best care for their feline companions.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of squamous cell carcinoma in cats is not fully understood, but several risk factors have been identified. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is one of the most significant risk factors, especially for cats with light-colored fur or those who have a lot of unpigmented skin, such as the ears and nose. These areas are particularly vulnerable to sun damage, which can lead to the development of SCC. Cats that spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in sunny climates, are at an increased risk of developing SCC in areas of the body that are not covered by fur.
