Aun Music Archives #16

I have a backlog of albums, so I’ll just give a quick blurb here. Also, the ranking list is becoming quite a mess, so from this point on I will list the albums in alphabetical order under scores but keep a top list of a certain amount. I’ll start with a top 25 and expand potentially if necessary.

Neko Case — “Hell-On” (2018)

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Neko Case delegated more responsibility than usual to outside entities for this album and even arranged to get Mark Lanegan to provide co-vocals on a few tracks. It’s a solid, coherent album that would receive more praise here if a lesser artist made it. Personally, I prefer the previous three solo releases over this one.

Martina Topley Bird — “Forever I Wait” (2021)

Rating: 4/5

Tricky found Martina Topley Bird in a random street encounter. She was singing to herself, Tricky needed a vocalist, and that was the start of the two of them working together on Maxinquaye — a pioneering staple of the trip hop genre. T

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds — “No More Shall We Part” (2001)

Rating: 5/5

Ranking: #2

An absolute classic album where Nick Cave establishes his transformation from post-punk goth rocker of the 80s, to murder-and-death storyteller of the 90s, to a focus on life and spirituality. Cave provides social commentary on religion and the general human condition without coming across heavy-handed. This album, Murder Ballads, and Tender Prey are the three albums I recommend for anyone new to Nick Cave’s work.

Nurse with Wound — “Opium Cabaret” (2021)

Rating: 4.5/5

These albums are a bit difficult to rank with respect to others on the list, albeit Nurse With Wound’s latest release is still more accessible than many works under the avant-garde and expermental banners. More of a throwback to older work than more modern releases, it paints a similar mood. Only a few tracks, but the tracks are long, extended soundscapes.

If you’re into instrumental, slower-paced, darker but not metal works, definitely check this one out. It’s not the best of Nurse With Wound, but it’s still a quality album.

The New Pornographers — “In the Morse Code of Brake Lights” (2019)

Rating: 5/5

Some reviewers stated this is nowhere near The New Pornographers best work. While I wouldn’t say it’s their best work, it’s definitely a cohesive album of quality music. The New Pornographers, despite losing members temporarily due to the nature of the project (it was intended as a side project and everyone else has other projects), continue to release top tier indie pop. This album is a must-own for fans of indie pop / rock.

Tsaraas — Шепот зарытых сердец (2008)

Rating: 4.5/5

Tsaraas is a one man project creating dark ambient with a heavy influence from early industrial music. It’s from Russia, but knowing Russian isn’t necessary given it’s mostly an instrumental album. Definitely an album to check out if you are into slower paced, dark instrumental music.

Neko Case — ”Middle Cyclone” (2009)

Rating: 5/5

The album cover itself is worth a 5 out of 5 for Middle Cyclone. Fortunately, the music on the album is of equal quality. Perusing online reviews, it seems this album has it’s fair share of one-star reviews that often point to it’s “cliche writing”, excessive effects and processing, and similar sound of all of the songs on the album. It’s definitely a bridge album of sorts between older and newer work by Case.

With enough effort, it’s possible to discover music listeners willing to label Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica as too mundane and mainstream. If you want wholly different and unique, I cover quite a few albums like that too (there are a few on this list). If you’re just wanting a quality album that combines two genres I typically don’t care about (pop and modern country) with indie rock sensibilities, definitely pick this up!

The New Pornographers — ”Mass Romantic” (1998)

Rating: 4.5/5

The New Pornographers’ first album, and it’s really good for being what was initially intended to be just a temporary side project of sorts. It’s a start to a collaboration that created some of the best indie pop / rock of the late 90s to present.

Macroblank — “ラストチャンス” (2022)

Rating: 4.5/5

A downtempo, ambient, vaporwave album of sorts. Works great as background music but has enough subtle complexity to be worth a more focused listen. It’s not my favorite of the Macroblank albums. Check out the one before for one of my favorites!

Macroblank —” 行方不明” (2021)

Rating: 5/5

It’s similar to the above album, except I enjoy this one a bit more. It’s more experimental / vaporwave / ambient / instrumental electronica that’s quite competently composed.
