Aun Music Archive Series #14 — A Few Albums Discovered on YouTube

YouTube is a treasure trove of obscure music recordings. Here are a few I discovered over the past week.

Rizomagic — “Voltaje Raizal” (2021)

Columbian duo Nino Pueblo and Dorado Kandua come together and try to fuse IDM and traditional music. For almost the entirety of this album, it works perfectly! Interesting samples, complex rhythms, and elements of traditional South American and Afro-Caribbean music blend together to create an album that’s very close to being a masterpiece.

Prefuse 73 — The Failing Institute of Drums & Other Percussion (2021)

Producer Scott Herren is back for another Prefuse 73 title, this time utilizing percussive sounds. Marimbas, xylophones, and related instruments help many of the tracks sound quite melodic despite being percussion-centric.

This is definitely worth checking out!

Alina Bzhezhinska — “Inspiration” (2018)

The Ukrainian-born Alina developed into a world-renowned harpist. “Inspiration” is the harpists attempt to pay homage to John and Alice Coltrane. While a harpist leading the band might not sound terribly great, it works perfectly here! A great jazz album to check out!

Tatvamasi — “Parts of the Eternity” (2013)

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFY0lqDrDGE&t=30s

Following a near fatal car accident, Grzegorz Lesiak decided to change direction with his music, away from folk and to progressive rock / jazz / experimental. Lasiak founded the quartet Tatvamasi after a few years of recovery and returning to write music.

Tatvamasi is an electric-guitar-led band from Poland. Fusing together free jazz, experimentalism, progressive rock, and influences from a variety of sources, Tatvamasi managed to create a fairly unique-sounding album. I’ve yet to listen to their later releases. Hopefully it’s a case of building upon this album instead of regressing.

If you love instrumental albums and enjoy jazz or prog rock, this album is a definite recommend!
