August & September 2021 Multiplayer/MMO Game Closures

We have lots of multiplayer games closing soon, with many more leaving without even a prior notice. A few that we noticed had been taken down without any notice include:

  • Phoenix Dynasty 2 — Complaints about servers being inaccessible on Steam since February of this year.
  • Arc the Lad M, Dragon’s Quest Rivals Ace, Dragon’s Quest: Quest of the Stars all closed earlier this year. I just missed the announcements.

Cronous — Closes August 20th, 2021

You probably can’t create an account any more for this one. It’s an early action RPG MMO that clearly shows it’s age and has long been neglected by it’s current staff, likely because it’s an old game that lacks the revenue for adequate staff. Apparently the Korean version is still available.

War Machines — Closes August 23rd, 2021

I just spent half-an-hour looking for information on the Armored Warfare closure, mistakenly believing Armored Warfare by, not War Machines, was the game that’s closing. Apparently Armored Warfare is still hanging on. War Machines, the generic version of Armored Warfare, is the game that’s closing. It feels more like a mobile game than a legitimate designed-for-PC title.

Population has remained steady throughout it’s Steam lifespan, at least based on SteamCharts data. Currently, the average player-count is 42. Average player-count has never dipped below 20 and if you remove the outlier (opening month), it has never dipped below 30 for any month. It has also never exceeded 70 nor peaked above 128. It seemingly has a core base of players that enjoy the game and whatever the marketing campaign was for this game, it was seemingly a failure.

Call of Duty Online — August 31st, 2021

Call of Duty Online is a free-to-play online version published by TenCent for China’s market. It is being replaced by a mobile version of Call of Duty that released in December 2020.

Grimm’s Echoes — August 31st, 2021

Another gacha game is closing. This one apparently will retain some form of offline playability, but it is uncertain what exactly.

Five Need for Speed titles — August 31st, 2021

Five Need for Speed titles will be ending online services on August 31st. These include:

  • Carbon
  • Undercover
  • Speed Shift
  • Speed Shift 2: Unleashed
  • The Run

As much as I used to really love the NFS series (and still enjoy to an extent), the number of titles on the market is a bit overwhelming and the newer titles have been underwhelming.

Primeval — September 1st, 2021

Primeval is a turn-based strategy game by an independent developer that never really took off. Per the developer, current population figures are insufficient for matchmaking given the sparse logins aren’t even occurring during the same general time period. This game is rather complex, too. If you want to give it a try, feel free to contact me and we can try to arrange a match. A tutorial is available here:

Fallout 76’s Nuclear Fallout mode — September 1st, 2021

Fallout 76’s battle royale mode will be closing on September 1st. It appears to be a game mode the current playerbase has almost no interest in playing. The battle royale market has mostly settled on a few titles, so we’re likely to see many battle royale closures over the next few years.

Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade — September 10th, 2021

WH40: Eteral Crusade was initially slated to be a large, open world MMORPG. Instead, it’s Planetside 2 with smaller maps and less to do. The freemium version was even worse, often taking in excess of an hour to get a map to launch and the PvE content consisting of a wave mode that was only designed with four players in mind.

Forza Motorsport 7 — Delisted September 15th, 2021

Forza 7 will be delisted on September 15th, 2021. If you obtained it free through Gamepass and purchased DLC, you should be able to obtain a free digital copy of the base game to play after it’s delisted. Multiplayer functionality will still work for those who own the game after September 15th.

Antaria Online R, Astellia Online / Astellia Royale, and CODE2040 also announced their upcoming closures recently. Definitely check out these titles if you are interested before their final closing dates.
